What is good stress and bad stress?

Stress types can be classified differently. Internet is full of different types of stress but main stress types are divided as GOOD or BAD stress.

Good Stress (Eustress)

Good Stress calls “Eustress” and Bad Stress called “Distress”. Both types of stress could be acute and chronic.

Eustress is a short-term positive stress which gives needed motivation for performing or achieving or winning. Eustress can be fun, exciting and energizing (especially during short period of time). Eustress is needed for additional energy and/or inspiration – eustress provides the focus and energy needed for performing at the highest level of our body personal ability. Good stress (Eustress) is quite useful and necessary. The right amount of stress is positive and stimulating – it is healthy and helping us to perform tasks faster and better. Good stress strengthens our muscles, improves our heart functions, and sharpens our reactions and thinking. Some scientists even suggested that eustress helps our bodies resist infection.

The word “Eustress” consists of two parts – the prefix “eu” derives from the Greek word meaning “well” or “good” + the word “stress” = all together means Good Stress.

Scientists discovered that Eustress provides mental alertness, motivation, efficiency and increased self-esteem. Actually stress can be beneficial if people react positively (as positive as possible depending on situation).

In most cases Good Stress gives additional energy to throw yourself into something where you want to make some contribution and/or accomplishment (passing exam, winning competition, marrying loved one, etc.)

Many women recognize that life without stress could be very boring and not interesting. Good Stress makes life interesting and exciting – positive stress is essential for bringing zest to our boring life and positive stress is surprisingly healthy for our body. Good stress is making us stronger.

Actually distress is what we have in mind. Long-term distress could be a cause for depression in most women.

Bad stress (Distress) is a type of stress you cannot handle – if something negative is “attacking” and/or threatening you and you cannot adapt to this stress.
