Brown discharge during menstrual flow is fairly common among women. Brown discharge at any time of menstrual cycle is most often associated with old endometrial tissues. In general, brown discharge is commonly a result of the long menstrual period - the long period means that the blood has become oxidized thereby causing the change in color.
Brown discharge sometimes could be a symptom of pregnancy, Pelvic Inflammatory Diseases (PID), menopause, cervical cancer and some other medical conditions.
Brown smelly discharge is a signal of shedding of the uterine lining ("old shedding") happened because of some vaginal and uterine infections including sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
There are several conditions when women could have brown smelly discharge.
First of all, each young woman should know that normal physiological vaginal discharge is usually clear, creamy or very slightly yellow without unpleasant smell but could be very specific to each woman natural smell. The volume of normal vaginal discharge can be changed during different days of your menstrual cycle. Any change of vaginal discharge should be alarming symptom for women.
It is normal for every woman’s vagina to have a unique smell - it is natural. But increased and/or "fishy" brown discharge in most cases is a symptom of vaginal and/or uterine infections:
Bacterial vaginosis;
Poor hygiene/vaginal infections;
Trichomoniasis;
Unusual infected object in vagina;
"Losing" a tampon in vagina - infected old tampon;
Recto-vaginal fistula;
Cancer of the cervix.
