Brown discharge during pregnancy is always alarming symptom and specil attention should be paid to it. Although many pregnant women could have brown discharge during whole pregnancy without any serious reason but sometimes the brown discharge during pregnancy could be a signal of some serious conditions.

BROWN DISCHARGE during early pregnancy

Brown discharge could be the first signal for pregnancy. Sometimes early in pregnancy there may be spotting or a brown discharge at the time a period would normally come. If this occurs after a woman engaged in sex without birth control, a pregnancy test should be taken to confirm that the discharge is due to early pregnancy.

BROWN DISCHARGE during late pregnancy

Pregnancy puts a major strain on the body and as the baby grows the added pressure on the muscles, joints, ligaments and surrounding organs can lead to cramping, discomfort and brown discharge in many women. In general the vaginal discharge increases as the pregnancy progresses and quite often it is normal and happens due to various reasons. As the cervix and the vaginal walls become tender during pregnancy, the vaginal discharge increases to keep at bay, any kind of infections traveling up from the vagina to the womb – it is kind of protection mechanism keeping pregnancy safer.

Although brown discharge during pregnancy is not uncommon but it is always alarming and first thought that comes to mind is that something is wrong with baby or pregnant woman. However, this is not always the case, as many women experience some kind of vaginal discharge that varies in color from red to brown during the first trimester of their pregnancy. Brown discharge during pregnancy is normal as long as the discharge isn't heavy with cramping or red like menstrual blood and blood clots. Brown discharge during pregnancy can be due to various reasons, of which some can be mild and some may be pretty serious.

Pregnancy development

During the first trimester of pregnancy, the body starts getting rid of the older blood which is present in the cervix. The most common cause for brown discharge during pregnancy, particularly late in the first trimester, is that the body is getting rid of the older blood remnants in the cervix. As the body grows, the original blood which is used to protect the womb is no longer required. This is the common cause of brown discharge during pregnancy.

Cervix sensitivity

During pregnancy the cervix becomes very sensitive and it starts spotting the brown discharge which is quite normal after vaginal sonogram and/or sexual intercourse. The irritation of the cervix causes a little tear which results in brown discharge which can last 2-3 days.

Implantation Bleeding

Implantation bleeding is another cause of brown discharge during pregnancy which occurs for about 2 weeks after conceiving and 4 weeks since the last menstruation. It basically occurs when a fertilized egg implants in the uterus that causes brown discharge, spotting or light bleeding.

Genital HPV

Brown discharge during pregnancy could be a symptom of the genital HPV which occurs due to increased estrogen production and greater blood flow to the area around the vagina.

Infections including STDs

Cervical and/or vaginal infections can cause unpleasant long brown discharge. Cervical and/or vaginal infections can also cause burning, itching, smelling in the vagina along with brown discharge.
Special attention should be paid to STD tests as all STDs should be treated immediately.

Molar Pregnancy

Molar pregnancy can be a serious reason for brown discharge during pregnancy. Molar pregnancy is a rare pathology and should be tested and treated immediately.
In molar pregnancy, the embryo doesn’t grow properly and there are abnormalities in the cells that grow to form placenta.

Ectopic Pregnancy

Brown discharge during pregnancy could be observed during ectopic pregnancy which occurs when the fertilized egg is planted outside the uterus. In most of the cases, the egg settles in the fallopian tubes and this type of ectopic pregnancy called tubal pregnancy.
Ectopic pregnancies should be removed as early as possible for the mother’s safety.

Miscarriage

Miscarriage can also be one of the common causes of brown discharge during pregnancy.  In most cases the brown discharge could be a starting signal for miscarriage. During miscarriage the body dispels the fetus, often for unknown reasons.
