Millions of women suffer from stress every day – four women out of five experience different types of stress at least twice a month.
Stress is a normal body response to threatening factors – factors which upset body balance. When body “feels” any kind of danger and/or “attack”, it reacts immediately - the stress response is the body’s way of protection. During stress body experiences a shock or perceives a threat – it triggered the release of hormones which are necessary for survival. Stress hormones (adrenaline, cortisol and norepinephrine) are released by the body in situations that are interpreted as being potentially dangerous for human body.
Stress hormones force your heart work faster, breath quicker, sense sharper, make your muscles tighten and raise your blood pressure. At the same time, blood vessels open wider to let more blood flow to large muscle groups, putting our muscles on alert and sweat is produced to cool the body. All mentioned physical changes increase your strength and stamina, speed your reaction time and enhance your focus – preparing you to either fight or flee from the danger and/or threat.

Actually stress is body's response to any kind of threat and/or demand – positive or negative. When women feel stressed (“attacked” by any external and/or internal factors), their bodies react by releasing chemicals (stress hormones) into the blood. These hormones give body more energy and strength to survive the stress.
If you are suffering from extreme stress or long-term stress, your body will eventually suffer; but sometimes, small amounts of stress can be good for your body. Some short-term stress during ordinary life situations (exam, test, competition, marriage, interview, presentation, etc.) could give you the extra energy you need to perform at your best. But long-term negative unpleasant stress (sickness, unemployment, bankruptcy, on-going family problems, etc.) could drain body’s energy and your ability to perform well.
Body’s stress response is the way of protection – in emergency stressful situations your body produce hormones which give you extra strength to defend yourself and sometimes safe your life. It is well known that women in stress situations can jump higher, run faster, react quicker and think faster. Strengthened body can better avoid accidents and survive threats.
Stress provokers can be real and sometimes even can be imagined, but in both cases body response adequately. Stress can affect not only your body but also your mind – some people could experience mental breakdown after serious stress. Valuable stress could be a reason for tiredness, sickness, absence of concentration, bad sleep, unexpected mood swings, etc. Every person experiences stress differently.
All factors and/or events which trigger stress called “stressors”. Millions of things can be stressors and stressors could be absolutely different for different types of women (starting from bad marks in the school up to huge accidents). Same stressor also could damage differently – it is very important to know your own limits. Body ability to tolerate stress depends on many factors, including the quality of your relationships, your general outlook on life, your emotional intelligence and genetics.
Instinctive stress response to unexpected events is known as “fight or flight”. The stress response (also called “the fight or flight” response) is very critical during emergency situations – faster you react, better you avoid the dangerous situation. Stress happens when you feel that you can't cope with pressure - this pressure could come in many shapes and forms, and triggers different levels of physiological responses.
It is important to know that stress does not always happen in response to things that are immediate or that are over quickly – sometimes on-going long-term events (conflicting relations, moving to new school, divorcing and/or separating, etc.) can also cause the stress. Long-term stressful situations can produce low-level on-going stress – in this situation your nervous system senses continued pressure and may remain slightly activated and continue to pump out extra stress hormones over an extended period. This kind of situation can use your body’s reserves (adaptation abilities) and damage your immune system which could trigger health problems and diseases.
Some women ask very simple explanation of the stress. The simplest description of the stress is overload – when you have too much to do during very short period of time without any help and/or support and at the same time you could be “punished” for not performing properly and in time. The simple solution is – never plan things which you cannot do and never promise things you cannot do or cannot do during limited time.
