What is HRT?
Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is a treatment used to replace the female hormones that a woman’s body is no longer producing because of the menopause.
During perimenopause and menopause levels of the female hormones (oestrogens and progesterone) fall and ovaries stop producing eggs. At that period of life menstrual cycles stop and women in menopause stop producing eggs (absence of ovulation).
Oestrogen and progesterone have very important roles in a woman’s body. When levels fall, this causes a wide range of physical and emotional symptoms known as “crazy” menopause symptoms. The HRT can restore level of mentioned hormones and insure hormonal balance and enable the body to function normally again.

HRT - Estrogens
Estrogens play very important role in the release of eggs from the ovaries. It regulates women’s and help in ovulation and fertilization.
Estrogens also help to regulate many other female body functions such as bone density, the temperature of the skin and vagina moist. Usually the reduction of estrogens cause most of the symptoms associated with the menopause such as hot flushes, vaginal dryness, loss of sex drive, mood swings, night sweats, thinning of the bone (osteoporosis).
HRT - Progesterone
The main function of progesterone is to prepare the uterus for a possible pregnancy. It also helps to protect the lining of the uterus (endometrium).
A falling level of progesterone does not have the same wide-ranging effects on women body as falling levels of estrogens. However, it increases the risk of developing the endometrial cancer.
Progesterone is usually used in combination with estrogens during menopause.
Women with surgical menopause - who have had a hysterectomy - do not need progesterone and can use estrogens only HRT.
