YELLOW VAGINAL DISCHARGE

Yellow vaginal discharge can be a symptom of several conditions and diseases. Several factors can cause vaginal discharge that is yellow in color, thick and bears a foul odor. Some women can get such yellow discharge before period, while others can get it after period.

Yellow vaginal discharge could be associated with vaginitis, cervicitis and/or sexually transmitted diases (STDs)

YELLOW VAGINAL DISCHARGE - Vaginitis

Vaginitis can be caused by yeast infection or trichomoniasis or bacterial vaginosis. Vaginitis caused by candida is more common and it can cause thick vaginal discharge of white (like cottage cheese) or yellow color. If the discharge is yellow, greenish or gray in color and is frothy, then it can be caused by the trichomoniasis. If the vaginal discharge is white or yellow, but thin and homogenous, then it may indicate bacterial vaginosis.

YELLOW VAGINAL DISCHARGE - Cervicitis

Sometimes, a large amount of yellow discharge can be a sign of cervicitis. Cervicitis is the condition, characterized by the inflammation of the cervix. It can cause vaginal discharge that can be yellow or grayish in color and bears a bad smell. Vaginal discharge associated with cervicitis can appear to be pus like. This type of discharge is called “mucopurulent discharge”. Apart from these, yellow vaginal discharge can be caused by conditions like, cervical polyps, sexually transmitted diseases like, gonorrhea and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).

Pale yellow discharge during pregnancy, which does not smell bad, can be normal. Women can experience an increase in watery discharge during pregnancy due to an increase in the flow of blood to the vaginal area and also because of rising levels of pregnancy hormones. In early pregnancy, the discharge is more likely to be white or clear, but in late pregnancy, the discharge can assume a light yellow color. But, if the vaginal discharge is frothy or it develops a foul smell and causes itching and irritation, then it can be caused by vaginal infection.

Cervicitis is most often caused by an infection. However, in a few cases it may be due to Cervical cap, Pessary, Diaphragm or allergy to spermicides used for birth control or to latex in condoms. Bacteria (such as staphylococcus and streptococcus) and too much growth of normal bacteria in the vagina (bacterial vaginosis), can also cause cervicitis.

Vulvovaginitis can affect women of all ages. Most women had vulvovagonotis at least once during reproductive period. It can be caused by bacteria, yeasts, viruses, and other parasites. Some sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) can also cause vulvovaginitis, as can various chemicals found in bubble baths, soaps, and perfumes. Environmental factors such as poor hygiene and allergens may also cause this condition.

Chlamydia Chlamydia is a disease caused by the bacteria Chlamydia trachomatis. It is most commonly sexually transmitted. Safe sexual practices and consistent condom use are important ways to help reduce your chances of becoming infected with chlamydia. A screening test for chlamydia is recommended each year for: Sexually active women age 25 and younger Women over age 25 who have new or multiple sex partners

Bacterial Vaginosis Every woman has many varieties of harmless bacteria in her vagina. In bacterial vaginosis, some of the bacteria multiply too much, so that more are present than is normal (especially Gardnerella and Mobiluncus bacteria). The main symptom of vaginal vaginosis is a fishy smell in the genital area. You may notice that the smell is worse after sex and during your period. There is usually a discharge, which is watery and greyish-white or grayish-yellow in color. The amount of vaginal discharge that is considered normal varies from woman to woman. Therefore, any degree of vaginal discharge that is abnormal for a particular woman should be evaluated. In general the bacterial vaginosis does not cause soreness or irritation.
